How the Economic Stimulus helps you deploy IP Voice & Data

To jumpstart the economy, this year’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act − among other things − extends the 2008 depreciation bonus of 50% on new capital equipment as well as the $250,000 expensing limit. So how might this work for you in 2009?

Let's keep the numbers simple and assume you want to spend $500,000. This purchase normally would be depreciated over 5 years at $100,000 per year.

Under the extended rules from Section 179 of the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, you can take the entire $250,000 expensing limit for 2009 and apply the 50% bonus depreciation to the remaining $250,000. This means the first year depreciation would be $375,000, leaving $125,000 to be depreciated over five years.

When you add the $375,000 from Section 179 and the bonus to the $25,000 first-year depreciation, your total write-off in 2009 would be $400,000!
